Power of “No Idea, Sir”

A leading business newspaper is running a campaign called “the power of ideas.” It makes me laugh. Because, from my personal experience, I know the “power of no idea.”

This was almost a decade back, when I was doing graduation in electrical engineering. Those were the most difficult years of my life. I was a very bad student and my concepts were pathetic. Despite sincere efforts from my friends to explain things in the simplest manner possible, I was unable to grasp most of the things.

In the first semester, the problem was not very acute. During vivas, when I couldn’t answer most of their answers, my professors used to advise me to take a change in civil engineering. I told them, “Sir, I will try hard and learn.” They were not very optimistic.

In the second semester, I had my first real encounter with electrical engineering, when I had to study “Electrical Engineering I”. (three more followed after that in subsequent semesters). The only thing, I could learn was Ohm’s law: I = V/R. That too only the mathematical expression. The exact definition was out of my reach. But, my kind-hearted professor gave me 20 marks out of 50, the minimum to clear the viva exam. He told me, “You have at least tried to draw the circuit diagram. I hope you will learn something next year.” I thanked him profusely and promised to do my best.

However, despite my attempts, I could not understand most of the things. In the second year, I had more electrical engineering subjects. (In the first two years of engineering all the streams have lot of common subjects like maths, physics, engineering drawing, applied mechanics etc etc. So, there are only few subjects in the first two years of your own branch.) By that time, I could no longer hide my weaknesses and professors were also not that kind. They expected certain amount of knowledge from a second year student. Sometimes, they will take viva of 2-3 students at a time. I was happy in those vivas, because they used to get only a limited time to insult me during those vivas. Invariably, to any question from my professors, my answer would be “no idea, sir.” After 2-3 questions, they will get frustrated and tell me, “What do you know? Ok, tell us what’s Ohm’s law?” I would promptly say, " I=V/R." They will demand the exact definition, which obviously I didn’t know. But, they kept faith in me and pushed me in the third year. That’s it.

After that, there was no mercy whatsoever. In all the vivas, my answer to most of the questions would be “no idea, sir.” But, somehow, that answer helped and I managed to clear all the vivas and finally became an engineer. Obviously, it was not in 4 years. I struggled for 6 years and 4 months to complete my course. However, since then, I have always known the “power of no idea.”

End of the road

I am deeply worried. Worried about my own future and for millions of others who are as ignorant as I am. The world is changing very fast. It used to be very simple When I was young.

In those days, Internet for me was yahoo chat rooms and e-mail. I still remember those college days, not very far, 7-8 years ago. My friends used to go for Internet surfing. They used to talk endlessly about having a foreigner online friend, female obviously. They used to boast how many friends they have and stuff like that. In my smugness, I used to look down at them. Poor souls! They are wasting their precious time on some fictitious chick, while I am getting enlightened.

Being a curious fellow, after a while I also decided to know what this Internet chatting is all about. I didn't know the rules of the game. I tried my luck with my most common Gujarati name (I can never forgive my parents for that) and whatever English vocabulary I had. The result was horrible. Chat room after chat room, forget girls, even the most hopeless aunties refused to talk with me. On the other hand, some of my friends were chatting with 3 girls at a time. After few weeks, I learned a few tricks. I started getting responses from some girls as I made use of my palmistry and sun sign knowledge. However, I couldn't make much headway as my typing speed was pathetic. Some of the girls used to think that I am busy chatting with another girl, when I was really struggling to find something on the keyboard.

I got fed up. But, being an intelligent fellow (in those days, not now), I decided to turn my weaknesses into my strengths. I asked myself, "What are my weaknesses in the yahoo chat room?" One I am a male and two my typing speed is horrible. Why not create a nice female id for myself and show those silly boys (my friends), what I am capable of. And the trick worked like a magic. As soon as I entered with a female id, all the boys in the chat room used to approach me. Even though, my typing speed was pathetic, those fools used to wait for minutes for a single sentence from me. It was entertainment at its best. Some of them used to tell their sad stories and even proposed to marry me. Most of them wanted my contact number. After few weeks, I lost interest and ended that silly game. Again, I returned to the comfort of reading great books. This time with even more smugness than before. My temporary affair with Internet ended there. I concluded that most of the stuff on the net is silly. It's only for frustrated boys who have never got a chance to speak with female species in real life.

After I joined journalism, I came to know about the power of Google. I was amazed. You don't need to remember anything. You don't need to think. Just type a few key words and Google will give you whatever you want. For people like me, who are blessed with poor memory, it was a gift from heaven. Once, I finished my course, I realized the power of online job sites. I also came to know about many wonderful things, like how I can listen to an old Hindi film song online and also watch a movie for free. My friends also told me how I can read e-books on the net. But, I don't like that idea even though it's cheap. I still prefer the old way of reading books.

Before coming to Phursatgunj, I was happy thinking I have become well aware about the Internet usage. I know stuff like how to book flight tickets online, Internet banking and online trading. Two weeks with Sabu and I am again feeling downtrodden. Everyday, he tells me something new about Internet which my tired mind refuses to understand. Brother, have mercy on this aging friend!!!

Anyway, I am lucky that I have some smart friends who have abundance of time and patience to explain the changing technology around me. But, I know everything has a limit. What will happen if they will all become very busy and lose patience? Sabu is already showing some signs of that. This can't go on forever. I can clearly imagine myself 10 years down the line. A helpless middle-aged guy whom even a 4-years old child will not respect.

The Last Dawn

Downloading autobiographies of Charles Darwin and Theodore Roosevelt and reading notes from underground is a vindicating way of rounding off a long boring and rather hectic day. Last night I enjoyed full 12 hour sleep and was in good mood early in the morning. But then after that my day was a total mess. Without knowing where we were going I followed nikhil like a dumb dog. He dragged me into some T-shirt printing press in karelibaug early in the morning. They do some strange activities in the college and celebrate different 'days' like vegetable day and cleanliness day. As part of this scheduled circus today is the group day and for this so-called 'group day' they wanted their T-shirts printed in the noon so that artists in hostels can write their name on the back of their respective T-shirts. T-shirts are ready now but my day was ruined. It is so boring to roam out and to go to the college meaninglessly. Even when I was a regular student I was never very regular and it contributed the most in my growth as a homo sapiens. Swamiji was there in the college even before we had arrived. Within one hour we were at masi's lari enjoying daal bhaji and chawal. No rotis masi said the second setback of the day. Third one was even funnier and hilarious for me. I lost so many games on FICS today and that too against very low rated players like 1500-.i never ever in my short carrier as a chess player lost so many games in a single day. My tournament score was 2.5/7.0 today, worst ever. In the evening swamiji came again and we went to kalubhai agian. Then after an hour or so at eight in the evening we were at mangal bazar in search of a t-shirt so that swamiji can print an image of OSHO on it. One hour in mangal bazar was most painful and annoying of them all, the final setback really made me a dumb dog. I was so annoyed that I was shouting things and was walking in the lanes of mangal-bazar as if I was there for hafta-vasuli. few sindhi shop-keepers with their faces like tandoori legs in curry unsuccessfully tried to convince me that I could easily print with the help of my t-shirt transparency on their low quality t-shirts. Finally we got one "plane white round neck pure cotton t-shirt" from a fatehgunj store at 9:30. I repeated that phrase at least hundred times at mangal-bazar. All the food-joints were closed when nikhil came back at kalubhai's at 10:30 and that was the final nail in my coffin. Finally after eating mahesh bahi's roti and dal-fry I was so tired that I was unable to read more than two chapters from war and peace. May be this is my last post for now and I am going into hibernation again for sometime as I have to finish few things undone. Good night. Amen.

29!

extension lobby of S.J. Hall !! one dark alley rather with doors and walls on both sides. there lived a man nicknamed kacchua. during my first few days of stay with this man in room no. 80 of extension lobby i realized that we are going to enjoy each other's company. so lazyman he was that he never ever started any conversation. after ten days of stay together he told me that he was going to Ahmadabad for his office training. and after three months when he came back we were on drinking spree. insolent ideas for model making was his plus point as a student of architecture. once he used cigarette stubs instead of trees in his model of an art gallery. it was a part of his fundamental rights to keep everything in total mess and dirty inside the room as a senior to me and more as a student of architecture. i never revolted because i also loved the way our room was. drinking country wine and then playing 29! with my useless friends was a real fun. Hiren never ever mastered the game like us but he was reliable as a partner. during his final year thesis less time we consumed in creating something new or giving shape to our strange ideas and improving design, and more time we gave to the philosophy of making 'joints' more easily. he had a big 'bong' but we preferred 'joints' more than bongs. Kandisa was our favourite album and we had played a lot of music on his barbarian tape recorder. at the end of the dark age CD players were still a luxury. as nobody in extension lobby was interested in any kind of study keeping volume low was out of the the question. out of fifty only five students in extension lobby were allowed to keep term with one or two subjects and everybody else never cared for their results.

Typical day in our life during those golden days...

Intoduction to BABA

Hello friends,
I guess this is my first post on this blog but i promise you some real time fun in this episode. This is especially written for the people who doesn't know lazyguru 20box and anando rocks....
first of all in this episode let us meet Mr. Anando rocks alias BABA by their pathetic friends.
I still remember those days when i was in first year engineering. Since our admission was
late thats why our semester exams were not held up with the other year students. Anyway the point is Anando rocks was having his exams as he was senior of mine and used to study during whole night, and myself a night creature from the begining of my engineering career use to roam with my other first year mates (thats also a story in itself). During those days the so called BABA had a different AVATAR. You can say he was BHAI during those days along with other bhais KULO BHAI, GAURAV BHAI were cheifly with him.
So when the exams were going you can easily see this triology along. They use to have a pathetic looking study material (which i guess circulated for ages) in there hand and rooms scattered every where. And to top them all Anando while studing use to wear a pathetic looking BANDANA which give him a complete gear to become a certifide bhai. Anando damn serious
looking guy in those days use to see you with so much deep penetrateing eyes that those create a panic in anyone who use to make sound when this three people were studing. Months past and their exams were finished but I haven't had my first talk with this guy till then only fierce looking glances which he use to give were adequate.
Then after some time we were going to have inter-hostel tournament and for various games team were been chosen. I was chosen for Kabbadi but i didn't wanted to play so i was denying.
My great people of that time came to me and said that i should have a hostel spirit and should participated, but i refuse all. Then one day Anando with his friends was sitting at hostel porch and on the other side were sitting sports team making commity. As i walked in from outside in was been held up there to force me to participated by sporst moniter, but i was refusing all the way till i heard a gentle voice from the other way saying
"Why I'am not participating and whats the problem"
I looked in the direction of the voice and saw the Anando with the same fierce looking eyes penetrating me deep inside like measuring me up to something and in that terrified moment i said YES to participated.
Time passed and then some how we came to talking terms of HI and HELLO and then slowly was included in there station going circle (via bhoot gali), in thos days bike were not so popular in hostels so we use to go walky-talky. Still this person had some dep influnce on my mind that i was always scared of him.
Then some how his AVATAR changed and he was slowly transforming himself to what that guy is right now. This were those days when I consider that we became friends. We had many adventure among them to name mainly was the riots episode. He love to do nothing and sit endlessly doing nothing but having talking with friends under a NEEM tree. He is a slid guy who can get to anything once provoked but that again is what not everyonce can do it. He has got extraorinary taste in music and sings very well.
Anyways guys now I'm bored of writting and now i shall finish this topic just saying that HE
is a guy of many colours.
Watch out my next episode to checkout HIS pathetic friends introduction.

Exam nightmares

My blogging streak continues thanks to my friend's laptop and abundance of time. As many of my closest friends know, I am suffering from many phobias. The most notable amongst them is examphobia. I am 28, happly unmarried and an accomplished (don't take it seriously) journalist. Still, the fear of failing in exams returns night after night. The genesis of this fear can be traced back to my engineering days.

Till my higher secondary days, I was a very sincere student. When I was in 10th standard, I used to think that I have it in me to be amongst the top 10 students in my state. It's a different matter that it never happened. But, I was very confident about my abilities in those days. My confidence reduced from top 10 to top 1000 by the time I reached 12th standard. Somehow, by the grace of God, I got admission in one of the best engineering colleges of my state. And the downhill journey began...

Exam after exam I continued to fail. The fear of facing exams became intense with each passing year. It took me six long and painful years to complete engineering. The memories of those paniful days still linger. My confidence was at an all-time low in those days. The fear reduced a bit when I joined journalism. However, the wounds never healed completely.

Just a night before, I had a nightmare. I am in the 12th standard. I haven't yet started preparing for my maths exam. All my friends have completed the entire course. It's a hopeless situation and I am destined to fail. My heart starts beating fast. That familiar pain and anxity revisits. Suddenly I woke up from my sleep and after 2 minutes I realised it was a dream. I remember I cleared maths exams in 12th standard some 10 years ago with decent numbers.

I am now working and no longer need to face any exam unless I decide to change my job. This is one of the professional hazards of being a journalist. Every time, you try for some job, you are asked to give a test. This is one of the reasons I don't like to change my job in a hurry.

That dreaded notice board

Which is the most frightening sight for me in this world? Well, it's that dreaded notice board of the electrical engineering department, announcing another year of complete bed rest. I have gone through this traumatic experience for years during my long and arduous stay at the Faculty of Technology and Engineering, M.S.U., Baroda.

The first few moments were really tough. The verdict is out, and your fate is sealed for one more year. After my first encounter with the notice board, I tried hard to reduce its DC effect. I tried to avoid looking at my name on it, unless I was convinced that this time I would not get the death sentence. I would see how my best friends have fared in the exams? I would become happy if they have done well. Not because, I liked them. But, it was a precursor to my own fate. Looking at their results, I would know, whether I will get a reprieve this time or will have to serve one more year of rigorous imprisonment.

After the first few disastrous experiences, I decided that enough is enough. I took my fate in my own hands. I started to remain absent from the examination hall, when I was sure about the outcome. This strategy worked for some time and reduced my pain to a large extent. No more waiting for the final verdict. However, this was just a temporary relief. I couldn't avoid the notice board permanently. Periodically, I was forced to look at it.

If God will ask me what's your last wish before death, I will say "to smash that f**#ing notice board".
